Letter to CBC Vancouver: Haiti coverage

Vancouver BC

July 18, 2010

Hello CBC Vancouver,

Thank you for the correction to my e-mail query several days ago. I listened via podcast to the July 12 Early Edition story on Haiti and found it interesting. It’s unfortunate that the planned interview with Garry Auguste on the afternoon program hit a snag.

I'd like to offer a few thoughts on the CBC’s and other media outlets’ coverage of the six month anniversary of Haiti’s earthquake.

One segment served as a capstone: "Land Ownership at the Crux of Haiti's Stalled Reconstruction". Although it drew on other material, it was primarily an interview with Kim Ives, journalist with the newspaper Haiti Liberté. And what do you know, it turns out to be just one more example of the Shock Doctrine in action

At a UN Conference on Mar. 31, about 60 countries and multilateral banks promised $5.3 billion for Haiti's reconstruction over the next 18 months. Only about 10% of those promises have been delivered on (some of it just forgiven debt), and of that money delivered into a World Bank managed fund, only a fraction has been spent to help Haiti.
