The Ontario provincial government is marking the Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act with projects to remember, educate and commemorate the history of the abolition of slavery in Ontario. The Ontario Bicentenary Exhibit will be hosting Haiti Day – Commemorating the battle of Vertières.
The Battle of Vertières, is the last major battle of the Second War of Haitian Independence, the final part of the Haitian Revolution. It was fought between Haitian rebels and French expeditionary forces on November 18, 1803 at Vertières. This date is a national holiday in Haiti.
The Exhibit will host a day of lectures and discussions on the Haitian revolution and its impact on freedom, with the Haitian Consul, Dr. Eric Pierre as keynote speaker. Featuring displays and demonstrations of the art, music and literature of Haiti.
