Resisting the G8/G20: Haiti Workshop at the 2010 People's Summit in Toronto

Faces at the Bottom of the Well: Building People-to-People Solidarity with Haiti’s Popular Organizations

presented by Toronto Haiti Action Committee (THAC)

This workshop will address the issue of imperialism’s role in the economic, social and political oppression and exploitation of the working-class and rural populations in the country. The workshop will make clear that the January earthquake merely uncovered a condition of life in Haiti that was already unbearable for much of the Country’s people. The current reconstruction effort is an attempt by imperialism to further entrench a neoliberal capitalist development model on the backs of Haitians. Further, the facilitators will expose NGOs as tools that reduce the capacity of Haitian civil society and the state to assert sovereignty and set national priorities.

The presenters will be:

Claire Heese-Boutin, University of Toronto - "Emerging and Absent Voices in Haiti"

Martin Bracey, Toronto Haiti Action Committee - "What has changed since the earthquake and what are some alternative models?"

Sabrina Johnson, Toronto Forum on Cuba - "Cuba's Solidarity and Healthcare Development in Haiti"

Paul Kellogg, Venezuela We Are With You Coalition - "Regional Approach to a People-centred Development of Haiti"

Ajamu Nangwaya, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Locals 3907 & 3902 - "The Role of Public Services/Public Sector and Agriculture in Reconstruction"
