On February 29, 2004 Canadian Special Forces Commandos called JTF2 “secured” the airport from which Haiti’s democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was taken at gunpoint by US Marines and flown into exile to the Central African Republic. Almost immediately following Aristide’s removal and the dismantling of Haiti’s entire government structure, 500 Canadian troops patrolled the streets of Port-Au-Prince and helped take control of the capital and contain the popular uprising against the “kidnapping” of Aristide. Canada then provided vital support to the interim “illegal” government that killed thousands.
More than Five years after the coup, 9000 foreign troops continue to occupy the country and Haiti remains in crisis.
