Press release: Amidst calls for Duvalier’s prosecution, Haitian human rights lawyer blasts Canada’s role in “impunity” in Haiti

MONTREAL, JANUARY 21--Days after former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier returned to Haiti, a leading Haitian human rights lawyer blasted the Canadian government’s role in what he criticized as a climate of “impunity” in Haiti.

In a Montreal press conference on January 21, Mario Joseph—who the New York Times has referred to as “Haiti’s most prominent human rights lawyer”—spoke about the legal case for the prosecution of Jean-Claude Duvalier for crimes against humanity.

HAITI NEEDS FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS! NOVEMBER 28 ELECTION IS EXCLUSIONARY AND A VIOLATION OF DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS

Statement of the Canada Haiti Action Network: November 3, 2010

The Canada Haiti Action Network (CHAN) is once again expressing its grave concerns about exclusionary elections in Haiti.1 It joins with the many Haitians as well as human rights organizations in Haiti and abroad in condemning these elections as serving the interests of Haiti's wealthy elite and the foreign powers that have dominated Haiti's past and present.

Unstable Foundations: Human Rights of Haiti's 1.5 Million IDPs - Mark Schuller

Haiti's 1.5 million homeless have once again become invisible. Because they are not seen or heard in mainstream media, most people assume things are improving, the problem solved.

Unfortunately they are wrong.

While it goes unseen, and therefore the U.S. Congress is not being pressured during this midterm election season to end the deadlock that is holding up 1.15 billion dollars in promised aid to Haiti, the situation remains quite urgent.

Petition: Haiti Needs Emergency Relief, Not Military Intervention!

The Canada Haiti Action Network, working alongside colleagues in the UK and the United States, would like to announce the launch of a new petition campaign urging the reorientation of the relief effort in Haiti. It has become increasingly clear that the immediate crisis provoked by the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti has become a pretext for the massive deployment of military forces - particularly from the US, but also from Canada. For many reasons, this is a gravely mistaken policy, hidden amidst the outpouring of genuine concern for the suffering in Haiti.

CANADIAN & US MILITARY SHOULD NOT TREAT VICTIMS OF HAITI'S EARTHQUAKE LIKE ENEMY COMBATANTS

EXAGERATED REPORTS OF LOOTING THREATEN VICTIMS

January 19, 2010
For immediate release

The Canada Haiti Action Network is deeply concerned about the militarization of the relief efforts in Haiti and exaggerated reporting of ‘looting’ and violence. This increases the danger of violent treatment of the victims of the earthquake.

A Major Earthquake Devastates Haiti

Many people will have heard the tragic news that on Tuesday, January 13 Haiti was hit by a devastating 7.0 earhtquake. Information on the suffering and damage are only just coming in with reports of massive destruction and possibly thousands killed. The Toronto Haiti Action Committee recognizes that this is a critical time for our solidarity. We will be gathering information in the coming days and will post updates on how people who wish to make donations for emergency relief can funnel their aid to grassroots movements in Haiti.

The United Nations' says "good reasons" for banning Haiti's largest political party

December 28, 2009-- The Canada Haiti Action Network expresses its grave concern at the November 26 decision by Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council (Conseil électoral provisoire--CEP) to exclude the Fanmi Lavalas party from planned elections to take place on February 28, 2010. On that date, Haiti will hold elections for 98 of 99 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and ten seats of its 30-seat Senate.
