Petition: Haiti Needs Emergency Relief, Not Military Intervention!

The Canada Haiti Action Network, working alongside colleagues in the UK and the United States, would like to announce the launch of a new petition campaign urging the reorientation of the relief effort in Haiti. It has become increasingly clear that the immediate crisis provoked by the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti has become a pretext for the massive deployment of military forces - particularly from the US, but also from Canada. For many reasons, this is a gravely mistaken policy, hidden amidst the outpouring of genuine concern for the suffering in Haiti.

CANADIAN & US MILITARY SHOULD NOT TREAT VICTIMS OF HAITI'S EARTHQUAKE LIKE ENEMY COMBATANTS

EXAGERATED REPORTS OF LOOTING THREATEN VICTIMS

For immediate release

The Canada Haiti Action Network is deeply concerned about the militarization of the relief efforts in Haiti and exaggerated reporting of ‘looting’ and violence. This increases the danger of violent treatment of the victims of the earthquake.

A Major Earthquake Devastates Haiti

Many people will have heard the tragic news that on Tuesday, January 13 Haiti was hit by a devastating 7.0 earhtquake. Information on the suffering and damage are only just coming in with reports of massive destruction and possibly thousands killed. The Toronto Haiti Action Committee recognizes that this is a critical time for our solidarity. We will be gathering information in the coming days and will post updates on how people who wish to make donations for emergency relief can funnel their aid to grassroots movements in Haiti.

Statement from Canada Haiti Action Network on the recent disaster in Haiti

Ottawa - Haiti has been devastated in recent weeks by a succession of storms, namely Hurricanes Fay, Gustav and and Ike, and Tropical Storm Hanna. Fay was the first to hit, on August 15, and Ike was the last, on September 7.

Aftermath of Hurricane Hanna

Almost 500 bodies have been found in the port city of Gonaives, Haiti, after floodwaters caused by recent storms receded, according to reports. Police commissioner Ernst Dorfeuille said 495 bodies had been found and the toll could get higher.
